Meat Offered To Idols | Cards Against Humanity, Social Networks and Media

I and my girlfriend discuss daily the scriptural readings on the Orthodox Calendar. We also started having bible studies over Skype before evening prayers. While we haven't been perfect with our discipline regarding these things, it has been a rewarding thing that I believe God has used to strengthen and correct us.

I've discussed with many Christians the stance on jokes and humor and whether or not it requires context or not. The other day we were discussing the passage from Ephesians 4:29.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
and Ephesians 5:4

Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.

Now this brings up the question as to how this relates to the blog title. Well there is also this passage:

...with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse (1 Corinthians 8: 7b-8)

My girlfriend brought this point up with both of us have a growing discomfort at participating in games like Cards Against Humanity. She also brought this up in regards to how we use social media, that both of us tend to mindlessly scroll until we are led to sin (either by jealousy, anger, irritation, saying or typing foolish things or otherwise). 

We had been in this conundrum because we had thought of it from the perspective of whether or not a card game or social media were inherently sinful or not. But that isn't really the point. Because of the way we personally are both convicted by what we read and because of we feel when we engage in these activities, for us it is not good nor is it healthy. We started to identify ourselves as the ones with the weaker consciences. Because of that we have been growing to feel a lot more comfortable with simply telling people who ask that we simply don't feel comfortable playing games like Cards Against Humanity or watching certain movies, that we don't (in here case) have social media because of how it makes feel a certain way and we don't use it properly (one of the reason why I'm deleting Instagram and Twitter). We are the weaker among the flock. We are the chief of sinners we confess ourselves to be at the Lord's Table every Sunday during the Divine Liturgy. For us, it is a better perspective and growing to be a more comfortable one.
