Foster a quiet life

"...we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread." - II Thessalonians 3:6-18

The Christian church of old is a strange one to behold. We live in an age, in a year where every opinion that everyone has is bolstered and put forth, raw and unapologetically. We are told that this is important. That everyone opinion, every viewpoint should be respected and pushed forth, should be celebrated in pushed forth, regardless of narrative, regardless of anything.

But in the church of old, I see The Desert Fathers, men and women who chose to live secluded lives in quiet outside of the city. Though it seems counterintuitive for impact, the sayings and teachings have survived 1700 years and are considered almost essential reading for the Orthodox Christian by many. People flocked from the cities to hear even a small sentence of wisdom with which they could put into practice from these holy people.

Perhaps their example is something to consider in an age of noise. I think there is a certain kind of silence, a certain kind of quiet that is greater than any word we can speak. Words are necessary. We must speak. But we must also remain quiet. For quiet is a necessity we often neglect.
